Topic One: Evolution of Homoeopathic Materia Medica

The goal of this discussion is to explore ways in which we study Materia Medica and in particular the apparent need to incorporate ever more remedies and rationales for prescribing. This creates a tension between the tried and proven qualities of well-known remedies - 'polycrests' - and many newer or smaller remedies that perhaps need more attention. Rather like a constellation of planets and stars, the study of Materia Medica can be a way of seeing the possible links between remedies, the overlapping patterns of many remedies that require a fine distinction in understanding. The art of Comparative Materia Medica has always been an important tool in any homoeopath's knowledge. This talk seeks to open up again the challenge of our ability to compare remedies from many points of view and clinical perspectives. 

Topic Two: Homoeopathy in Africa

Practicing homoeopathy in different cultures can reveal unique challenges that require adaptability in how we navigate the challenges of homoeopathic practice. Not only dealing with language issues but also many cultural assumptions regarding the practice of medicine, the role of the healer/doctor, the expectations of what type of care is given - even the colour and shape of the tablets - practising homoeopathy in much of Africa can be revealing and challenging. This talk will share some of the challenges and types of cases seen in a number of African countries and the possible reflections this has on how homoeopathy is often practised in "western" culture. 

Richard Pitt

Richard has been practising and teaching homoeopathic medicine in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1991. He originally trained and practised homoeopathy in England from 1984 and also studied in Greece and India. He has taught homoeopathy at different homoeopathic schools throughout North America and the U.K. and was the Director of the Pacific Academy of Homeopathy in San Francisco from 1996 to 2008. He was the President of the Council for Homeopathic Certification for 5 years and on the board for 17 years. The CHC is the largest professional certification organisation for the homoeopathic profession in North America. Richard was also on the board of the California Health Freedom Coalition which helped pass landmark health freedom legislation in California.

Richard is the Editor of the California Homeopath (www.californiahomeopath.com), an online homoeopathic journal, and has written a number of books, including the homoeopathic textbook, "Comparative Materia Medica, Integrating New and Old Remedies".

Between 2009 and 2013 he spent time living and working in Ghana, West Africa, and Malawi, establishing homoeopathy in rural areas, developing homoeopathic training programs and teaching local students. Since 2013 he has been an advisor to the Kenya School for Integrated Medicine and is now the Educational Director of the school.
